EU Policy Officer

The Role

CCDH is expanding our Policy and Partnerships Team and looking to hire a passionate, committed, and proactive EU Policy Associate.

This role will be the eyes, ears and voice of CCDH in Brussels and beyond, working to create strong relationships with The European Commission, European Parliament and advisors as well as our partners in civil society. The post holder will build interest in and awareness of regulatory action using the Digital Services Act and grow political appetite for further legislative strengthening to make online spaces safer.

The postholder will genuinely love working in political spaces and will have demonstrated experience in government and public affairs, building collaborative and inclusive strategies to win, and a willingness to champion solutions to addressing online harms in the EU and globally.

We work across a range of different areas, from protecting children online to countering identity-based hate and researching the harms of generative artificial intelligence. Policymakers, regulators, and elected officials are a key audience for us as we advance solutions, and in the EU, ensure regulation is enforced under the Digital Services Act. The Policy and Partnerships team is globally minded and impact-oriented, leading the charge on social media reform in the US and ensuring regulation is fit for purpose in the UK and EU. CCDH’s policy work in the EU seeks to strengthen the implementation of the Digital Services Act, secure robust protections and access to data for researchers, and build the case for reasonable safeguards for emerging technology products such generative AI. A successful candidate has demonstrated experience in working with government and political stakeholders to translate an advocacy strategy into policy impact.

This role will support the development of and deliver CCDH’s policy goals related to social media and technology reform in collaboration with the EU Policy Manager and Head of Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting engagement with EU officials, regulators and policymakers in the implementation of the Digital Services Act.

  • Collaborating with CCDH’s EU policy manager and UK/US policy & partnerships teams to execute strategic policy initiatives that further CCDH’s mission, including working with civil society and participating in coalitions.

  • Monitor, analyse and influence existing regulation and develop legislation related to online safety, child protection, AI and emerging digital harms.

  • Provide actionable intelligence to inform CCDH’s research, build partnerships with external organisations, and channel insight to policy audiences through written outputs.

  • Support in the organisation of stakeholder events and policy roundtables.

  • Some travel expected to relevant events in Europe and occasionally to the US.

  • In the execution of the CCDH’s EU policy strategy.

  • Monitoring developments on the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, AI Act and other relevant EU digital policy. and providing updates to the team.

  • Drafting policy analyses, policy positions.

  • Supporting political outreach and partnerships with other civil society organisations.

  • What are we looking for in a candidate?

  • Experience · 4+ years of relevant experience working in EU politics, for example for a Member of European Parliament, in the EU institutions or in public affairs.

  • Deep knowledge EU digital policy, specifically relevant is working with the DSA and AI Act

  • Big picture awareness to allow for work in an international NGO working in many jurisdictions

Desirable skills and personal qualities

  • Fluent/native in both English and at least one other European language, in particular French or German.

  • Analytical skills allowing you keep on top of EU policy updates and synthesise their relevance for CCDH.

  • Creativity and the ability to identify opportunities over a wide range of policy areas including digital, health and more.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience in policy analysis, development, and strategic planning.

  • Engagement and/or involved in existing networks related to the current debates on social media reform, online harms, disinformation, discrimination, and online safety policies.

  • Demonstrated commitment to creating change and generating consensus through working with diverse audiences across policymaking, campaigning, and the public.

  • Experience interpreting and using data to inform communications, public affairs and/or policymaking.

  • Familiarity with public affairs monitoring tools and techniques.

  • Ability to work with diverse audiences and teams with a positive and constructive attitude.
