Climate Action Network Europe is looking for a Gas Data Analyst (80%) with a strong policy focus

Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe’s largest coalition working on climate and energy issues. With over 200 member organisations in more than 40 countries – representing over 1700 NGO’s and more than 40 million citizens. CAN Europe works to prevent dangerous climate change and promote sustainable climate and energy policy in Europe.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and results-driven Data Analyst to join CAN Europe’s Energy Team in Brussels (80% work regime). This is a unique opportunity to apply data and policy analysis to change legal frameworks and contribute to CAN Europe’s mission in achieving fossil gas phase out from the EU’s energy system by 2035. In addition to a strong data analyst background, this role requires political awareness and strategic communications skills.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the European energy sector and policies, in particular fossil gas phase out with a specific focus on the EU Methane Regulation (EUMR). You will have the ability to place the Regulation’s content into the wider fossil gas and energy policy spectrum including gas and hydrogen markets, LNG trading, energy and in particular electricity prices. You will have expertise in analytical packages such as Python, R or similar. Your work will feed directly into the policy and advocacy work of CAN Europe’s gas sub team, part of the energy team. You will work in close cooperation with CAN Europe’s Gas Policy Coordinator.

Main responsibilities

  • Lead the collection and analysis of gas and LNG import data from the US and other sources in relation to the Methane Regulation. Hydrogen costs and energy price policies are additional topics.

  • Identify data gaps and proactively seek out new data sources and analysis techniques.

  • In addition to data, track key policies and debates in relation to the above mentioned topics.

  • Create and share powerful data-driven stories and products, including high-impact briefings, that inform and challenge decision-makers, and provide robust analytical input to advocacy and campaign materials.

  • Present research findings internally and externally and build a network of external partners to share data, ideas, analysis and expertise.

  • Support CAN Europe’s gas team and wider energy team in its outreach to policymakers, politicians, business leaders, civil society actors and the CAN Europe network.

Required qualifications

  • 3 years + experience in energy data analysis

  • Excellent knowledge of gas and energy markets

  • Expertise in analytical packages such as Python, R or similar.

  • Highly numerate, comfortable interpreting and visualising data

  • Proven ability to clearly communicate complex technical analysis

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Self-starter with strong organisational skills and effective time management with experience working in a dynamic environment. Ability to deliver to deadlines.

  • Passionate about the global and European energy transition.

  • Fluent in spoken and written English. Other European languages are considered as an asset.

What CAN Europe offers

  • An open-ended contract with flexible working hours and the possibility of teleworking.

  • This position is preferably based in Brussels but working remotely from a European country is also possible. We are not considering sponsoring visas this time.

  • Remuneration is based on our Belgian salary grid and adapted to the cost of living on location.

  • In addition to remuneration, CAN Europe is also invested in offering their employees professional development, career progression and networking opportunities. More about us:
