The Organization and Role

About Access Now

Access Now defends and extends the digital rights of people and communities at risk. As a grassroots-to-global organization, we partner with local actors to bring a human rights agenda to the use, development, and governance of digital technologies, and to intervene where technologies adversely impact our human rights. By combining direct technical support, strategic advocacy, grassroots grantmaking, and convenings such as RightsCon, we fight for human rights in the digital age. About this role

Recognizing the shrinking funding landscape across the human rights ecosystem and the myriad of threats to funding, Access Now is seeking to build a robust individual giving program over a 2 – 4 year period across three key stages. This consultancy is for stage one: Audit (setting the scene), which will establish a comprehensive overview of Access Now’s current individual giving program through an audit and analysis of our infrastructure, branding, and existing campaign materials, and will provide clear, actionable recommendations to be implemented in stage two of our individual giving roadmap.

What you will do

The consultant’s specific role and responsibilities include:

  • Auditing and analysing Access Now’s current individual giving infrastructure, its 2025 end of year campaign (running 17 November, 2025 – 16 January, 2026), and associated communication outputs (emails, social media posts, etc.), a competitor analysis (two similar sized organizations), and a list of recommendations for Access Now to implement as part of stage two: Implementation of recommendations (building a solid foundation).

  • Interviewing key stakeholders, including the Executive Director, and relevant members of the Development and the Communications and Engagement teams as part of the process to understand their roles and requirements.

  • Preparing a first draft report and presenting it to the relevant stakeholders for feedback and comments.

  • Incorporating the feedback, revising, and presenting the draft report to the relevant stakeholders, during two rounds of review and feedback.

  • Delivering the final version of the audit and recommendations report, ensuring full integration of all feedback.

Milestones and deliverables

Key deliverable:

A final audit and recommendations report that includes:

  • Audit of our current individual giving structure, including payments, CRM, databases, associated communications, and internal financial and compliance workflows.

  • Identification of gaps and opportunities in Access Now’s brand and messaging with target audiences.

  • Competitor analysis: identification of who Access Now is competing with in the digital rights space, and help identify our unique value add.

  • Analysis of our individual giving holiday campaign as a case study.

  • Actionable recommendations for next steps that will enable Access Now to build a comprehensive and robust individual giving program, including recommendations on personnel and capacity.

Milestones:

  • Meeting with key stakeholders.

  • Audit and analysis phase.

  • 1st draft of the audit and recommendations report.

  • Review and feedback loop.

  • 2nd draft of the audit and recommendations report.

  • Final draft of the audit and recommendations report with incorporated feedback to be presented to Access Now.

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

Experience:

  • A proven track record and experience in setting up and/or managing individual giving infrastructure in the non-profit sector.

  • A working understanding of U.S. and European contexts in non-profit individual giving, ideally with a focus on the digital rights field, but not essential.

  • Some experience in brand positioning and messaging/narrative work.

  • Experience with Engaging Networks is beneficial but not essential.

Skills:

  • Excellent writing skills, ability to produce written analysis to a very high standard (English).

  • Ability to synthesize data into practical and accessible information and recommendations.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Strong verbal communication skills, including presenting to stakeholders.
