The current vacancy is within the Director’s office of the Directorate for Innovation in Science and Policymaking: The mission of the Directorate is to advance innovation in science, democracy and policymaking by equipping the JRC, the Commission and the Member States with cutting-edge methodologies, experimental approaches, and forward-looking perspectives to address today’s and tomorrow’s policy challenges. Bringing together deep expertise in foresight, design, behavioural sciences, science for policy, participatory democracy, collaboration, quantitative analysis, and exploratory research, the Directorate supports all stages of the EU policy cycle—from agenda setting and policy design to implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.

The position provides direct support to the Director in diverse organizational and communication matters. The jobholder will act as Dir Communication Coordinator (CoCom) supporting the production, dissemination and brokering of knowledge produced in the Directorate, and networking with relevant JRC counterparts. The jobholder will provide horizontal support to the Directorate in the areas of briefings, Interservice Consultations, PUBSY validations and requests coming from DG/DDG offices and other JRC Directorates.

WE PROPOSE

We offer a dynamic position in a small, collaborative and fast-paced team supporting the Director for Innovation in Science and policymaking (a Directorate with 4 Scientific Units with around 200 staff). This position offers opportunity to contribute directly to the JRC’s mission of strengthening the science–policy interface and to develop communication strategies that enhance the visibility and impact of the JRC’s work. It offers regular engagement with the Directorate’s multidisciplinary scientific teams and the JRC communication network.

The jobholder will mainly have the following tasks:

  • support the Director in organisational matters, ensuring the preparation, uptake and follow-up of decisions;

  • assist in the preparation, organisation and follow-up of management meetings and Directorate events;

  • ensure horizontal support for communication activities and procedures within the Directorate, the JRC and outside; provide support in the areas of briefings, Interservice Consultations and requests coming from DG/DDG offices and horizontal directorates.

  • serve as the Directorate’s Communication Coordinator (CoCom), planning and ensuring coherent messaging, visibility and alignment with corporate communication priorities, both internally and externally as well as facilitating Portolios communication processes;

  • act as Briefing Coordinator, coordinating and preparing briefings and speeches for the Director;

  • act as Publication Officer (PUBSY IPO) back-up; and

  • support the community management within the Directorate ensuring coherence and complementarity of actions;

  • contribute to knowledge management activities, including the archiving and accessibility of key documents and communication outputs;

WE LOOK FOR

We are looking for a proactive Communication assistant who should have the following experience/skills (essential):

  • 3 years’ experience in the field of communication and outreach

  • excellent command of English (C2 level);

  • demonstrated experience in drafting news items, website management, event management, production of innovative communication material.

Soft skills:

  • High level of initiative, positive attitude to change and clear problem solving approach;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build good relationships both within and outside the JRC.

  • Resilience and multitasking

  • Team work attitude

  • Ability to work against short deadlines

Specialist skills:

  • excellent oral and written communication skills in order to communicate efficiently and fluently with internal and external stakeholders;

  • excellent coordination and organisational skills, with a high degree of flexibility, diplomacy and attention to detail;

  • sound knowledge of IT tools for the production of communication products (e.g. Adobe Premier Suite, Canva, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, Drupal)

Any of the following skills and experience would be desirable:

  • familiarity with corporate communication rules, process and IT tools within the Commission and the JRC

  • understanding of the JRC and its science-for-policy role

  • knowledge of another EU language will be an advantage.
