I’m looking for a: Newsroom manager (12 days/month or more)

About me: I’m the editor-in-chief of The European Correspondent, which I co-founded. This summer, we significantly expanded our team, restructured our newsroom, and are stepping up our journalism. We realised that we need more support in coordinating and running the newsroom. As such, we’re now looking for a newsroom manager.

I’m not looking for someone who wants to be a journalist, because this is not about writing or editing. I want someone who is fired up about figuring out newsroom processes, building the structures that can create the best journalism out there, and leading people. You should understand how journalism works, what needs journalists have, and bring experience in organising people, ideally in an NGO of some sort. You should be familiar with the difficulties of working in fully remote teams.

Together with me, you will be responsible for providing the structural background to allow our newsroom to fully focus on content.

You’ll be the go-to person for everything organisational. That includes planning editorial workflows, making sure people know what’s expected of them, setting up internal systems, streamlining our meetings, and helping us become more efficient. You’ll work closely with reporters, editors, freelancers, and the rest of our small (mostly remote) team – basically everyone.

You’ll be the person who makes sure our ambitions match our capacity and that we’re using our time and energy wisely. When something’s not working, you’ll fix it.

I’m not going to micromanage you. I want someone who sees a mess and wants to fix it – not someone who waits for instructions. If you like writing workflows, building Notion pages, gently but clearly holding people accountable, and thinking about how small tweaks can make big improvements, this will be for you.

This is a leadership role. That doesn’t mean giving speeches or being the loudest person in the Meets call, but it does mean being thoughtful, calm, communicative, and deeply invested in the people you work with. If you’ve managed a small team or built a project from scratch before, that’s a plus. If you’ve done it while juggling limited resources, shifting deadlines, and people working across three time zones, even better.

We’re a fully remote team spread across Europe. You can be based anywhere in the EU as a registered freelancer, but you’ll need to work European hours. English is our working language. We are a young organisation, still building our identity and routines. That’s both a challenge and an opportunity.

This job won’t be for everyone. It requires patience, creativity, a tolerance for ambiguity, and a real belief in what we’re building.

We want to deliver the best journalism our readers want from us, and for that, we need to be an organisation which people love to work at. If you’re someone who wants to shape the future of a newsroom from the inside out, help smart people do their best work, and turn ideas into reality, I’d love to hear from you.

  • You are a registered freelancer in the EU.
