SAPEA Scientific Policy Officer

The Scientific Policy Officer will be part of the FEAM secretariat and one of five SPOs working collaboratively across the SAPEA consortium. The position includes a range of responsibilities including the coordination of evidence reviews, stakeholder engagement, communication with EU institutions, and support for public outreach activities.

Tasks and responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a team of SPOs working in SAPEA. This position will act as the organisational lead on behalf of the SAPEA consortium for preparing Evidence Review Reports whenever FEAM leads, and support the preparation of Evidence Review Reports as required. Tasks will include, among others:

  • Acting as lead SPO for the work package on the “Interaction of academies and sharing of knowledge and practices”

  • Working closely with the FEAM Secretariat, the SAPEA Coordinator, the SAPEA SPOs, the SAM Secretariat, the SAPEA communications team, the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors, and other representatives of the European Commission

  • Drafting project outlines, including work and budget plans, and proposals for the outputs (i.e. Evidence Review Reports), occasional scientific writing

  • Contributing to the technical and financial reports of the SAPEA project

  • Organising meetings of working groups (virtual, hybrid, or in-person) and consultation processes

  • Maintaining ties with stakeholders in the science for policy advice ecosystem

  • Contributing to organising the peer review process of scientific publications

  • Undertaking project-related communications activities

  • Being involved in cross-cutting activities in the SAPEA project

  • Supporting the FEAM secretariat in organisational matters with respect to the project, including providing regular updates to the FEAM Board on the SAPEA project

Candidate profile

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree

  • Demonstrated experience in science-policy interface or a related field

  • Familiarity with the science-policy interface at the European level and the respective network of stakeholders

  • Excellent knowledge of EU policy institutions and processes

  • Strong written and oral English communication skills

  • Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary projects and coordinate diverse stakeholders

  • Confidence in communicating scientific concepts to both expert and non-expert audiences

  • High interpersonal and intercultural skills, including experience in building and maintaining strong working relationships with a range of colleagues, as well as internal and external stakeholders

  • Willingness to travel within the EU

  • Familiarity with EU-funded projects and networks is an asset

  • Right to work in Belgium

Working conditions

The SPO will be employed by FEAM under a Belgian labour contract. A hybrid working model is available, combining teleworking and in-office work from Brussels. Occasional EU travel is required.
