Lie Detectors is looking for students who’ll help us empower schoolchildren and their teachers to act as powerful lie detectors and critical thinkers in a world that’s increasingly populated by propaganda and distorted facts online. The work will mainly consist of data inputting to help us compile important statistics about our work in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.
The student job is based in the Lie Detectors Brussels office (Av. des Arts). The working student will be expected to come in for two working days per week, with a mix of full and half days depending on availability and workload. Specific working hours and days will be arranged in agreement with the student. Ideally, candidates are available from the end of June onward, but the start date can be discussed with individual candidates. Lie Detectors offers a fair remuneration.

- To turn working journalists and selected media experts into active participants in the drive for news literacy, creating positive contact between journalists and children as well as their teachers.
- To attune teachers to digital media risks, to the tools available to counter it, and to the benefits and relevance of further classroom discussion of a topic often relegated to IT lessons and after-school clubs.
- To create memorable classroom experiences and lasting awareness of children’s own participation in social networks; to propel pupils into an ongoing conversation of news consumption and verifying news.
- To provide a link between schools and the very best existing news-literacy and news-verification initiatives.
- To influence educational policymaking through continued public speaking in varied fora, advocating for the systematic uptake and inclusion of news literacy in the curricula of teacher-training colleges and classrooms across Europe, as urged by UNESCO and OECD. As part of this remit, Lie Detectors has served as a member of the EU’s High-Level Group on Fake News, advising the European Commission on how to tackle the spread and socio-economic impact of disinformation.
Job Details:
- Location: Lie Detectors Brussels office (Avenue des Arts)
- Schedule: Two working days per week; exact days and hours arranged with the student, within the annual limit of 475 hours for student employment in Belgium
- Duration: Up to 1-year contract
- Tasks: Transferring data from scanned forms into Excel
- Pay: €14 per hour. The student will pay a reduced social security charge of 2.71% on this amount.
