Climate Action Network Europe is looking for a Trade and Climate Policy Coordinator (Full-time, Permanent, Hybrid)

Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe’s largest coalition working on climate and energy issues. With over 200 member organisations in more than 40 countries — representing over 1700 NGO’s and more than 40 million citizens – CAN Europe works to prevent dangerous climate change and promote sustainable climate and energy policy in Europe.

We’re currently seeking a committed and motivated individual with demonstrated experience in trade and investment policy to work on various files with us, including EU trade policies, investment protection, ISDS (Investor State Dispute Settlement) and Trade Agreements and other processes relating to climate justice and just energy transition. The individual will contribute to the work of our Trade and Climate Policy team as a Trade and Climate Policy Coordinator under the supervision of their line-manager, working closely with the other Trade and Investment Policy Coordinator and our policy and campaigns teams across Europe. The position is full time or part-time (minimum 80% FTE), to be based in Brussels or working remotely from a country within Europe.

What impact you’ll have:

You’ll play a key role in influencing EU trade policy to align with climate goals and ensuring that trade agreements serve people and the planet. Your campaigns and policy work will directly impact ongoing EU legislative processes, negotiations, including work against the Energy Charter Treaty, dismantling the ISDS system, and opposing the EU-Mercosur trade deal.

Required skills and experiences:

  • University degree or equivalent qualification preferably in Political sciences, International Relations, Economics, or related field

  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in campaigning and strategy development on trade and investment policies

  • In-depth knowledge of EU institutions and processes, including practical experience of at least one policy process relating to climate, energy or trade and investment policy

  • Excellent level of written and spoken English

  • Outstanding communication and networking skills

  • High level of motivation and ability to coordinate the achievement of complex objectives within deadlines

  • Outstanding coalition or movement building skills, ideally demonstrated in an NGO or grass roots environment

  • Deep knowledge of trade and investment policy, in particular with investment protection, ISDS and free trade agreements and interconnections with climate, energy and industrial policies.

Other desirable qualities:

  • Demonstrated alignment with the mission, the modes of action, and the values of CAN Europe

  • Experience of working with a network of NGOs in the climate and energy fields

  • Familiarity with industrial policy and critical raw materials from “trade perspective” to facilitate cross-team work (e.g work on Clean Industrial Deal)

  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish

  • Decolonial intersectional understanding of just transitions

  • Experience with global climate justice movements Familiarity with EU institutions

Job contents:

  • This position will focus on developing and leading trade and investment campaigns and advocacy with particular focus on investment protection, ISDS, and Trade policies and agreements

  • Tasks will include:

    • External communications: Ensuring activities are noted in traditional and social media, writing articles for blog and website, newsletters for members, and outreach to external stakeholders including some representation and public speaking opportunities

    • Campaigning and coalition building: Looking ahead at upcoming opportunities to reach campaign objectives, maintaining and growing campaign network with members and coalition partners

    • Internal communications: Keeping the network of campaign partners and member organisations informed about upcoming campaign moments and providing necessary tools to maximize impact

What CAN Europe offers:

An open-ended contract with flexible working hours and the possibility of teleworking. This position is preferably based in Brussels but working remotely from an European country is also possible. We are not considering sponsoring visas this time. Remuneration is based on our Belgian salary grid and adapted to the cost of living on location. If the position is based at our head office in Brussels, we will offer a Belgian open-ended contract with an expected salary of between 3.850,00 € and 5.000,00 € gross/month for a full time position depending on the relevant years of experience (minimum 3 years) and subject to Belgian tax; Meal vouchers (7,00 €/day); transport costs; eco-vouchers (250,00 €/year); sport and culture vouchers (100,00 €/year), phone allowance (39,00 €/month); work computer.
