Become tech & AI journalist — The European Correspondent

APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Tech and AI journalist (8 days/month)

The European Correspondent is a non-profit European media organisation. We bring Europe’s most relevant stories to around 80,000 citizens from all over the continent to build a European public discourse. Founded in 2022, we are looking for passionate journalists to join our team. We're reader-first, value original thinking, sharp storytelling, and the courage to challenge assumptions.

About the role

As a tech and AI journalist, you’ll lead our coverage of new technologies and their impact on people’s everyday lives. You’ll provide grounded, fact-based reporting: not doom and gloom, not naively optimistic, but stories that make readers understand the threats and the opportunities of technological advancement.

You’ll be part of a Europe-wide editorial team shaping how we tell stories that make sense of this moment.

What you'll be doing

  • Write around 5 original stories per month - from deeply reported features to sharp explainers and opinion pieces.
  • Develop accessible, engaging coverage of often complex tech and AI topics - from privacy to deepfakes, from new uses of machine learning to data centres.
  • Track key debates across the EU, the US, and beyond.
  • Collaborate with other correspondents and desk editors to connect tech topics to their economic, ecological, or cultural context.

What we’re looking for

  • You understand core tech innovations and you know how to break them down for readers who aren’t AI nerds.
  • You’ve spent at least two years reporting on tech stories, and you can turn complex ideas into clear, compelling journalism.
  • You see stories not just in technological details, but in how they shape society, economy, and everyday life.
  • You have a sound knowledge of major European institutions and policy frameworks.
  • You’re collaborative, self-driven, and ready to help shape a young media organisation. You take ownership of your work and thrive when trusted with responsibility.
  • You have a collaborative mindset and strong attention to detail.
  • Bonus: you have experience with social media reporting, including vertical videos.
  • Essential: you’re a registered freelancer in an EU country and have excellent English writing skills (other European languages are a plus).

What we offer

  • Payment range: €960-€1440
  • If you're in Brussels, join us in our office, or work fully remotely from elsewhere.
  • A say in shaping an independent media start-up from the ground up.
  • Significant potential to grow with the organisation as we expand.
  • Access to a growing European network of journalists.
  • A mission-driven team that values openness and experimentation.
  • Starting date: July 6th
