Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe is a Brussels-based environmental NGO with a diverse, multidisciplinary and multilingual team. PAN Europe works to eliminate hazardous pesticides in Europe and beyond, reducing dependency on pesticides, and promoting ecologically sound alternatives to chemical pest control.
PAN Europe is an umbrella organisation representing 58 member organisations across Europe, including NGOs, scientific institutes, and farmers’ groups. Together, they contribute to EU policy development, legislative processes, and evidence-based advocacy on pesticides and sustainable agriculture. PAN Europe also leads European-level campaigns, strategic litigation, and EU-funded projects that accelerate the transition towards pesticide-free food systems.
Job description
The Communications & Social Media Officer helps to develop and implement effective communications and digital engagement activities to make our work visible to a wide audience.
The postholder will work closely with programme, fundraising, advocacy, and management teams to ensure that communications are accurate, consistent, engaging, ethical, and aligned with the organisation’s values and objectives.
Under the supervision of the line manager, you will organise and support media work, develop content and create social media posts. You will assist in the organisation of events and press conferences, and help with keeping our website up to date. You will track campaign analytics, come up with suggestions for improvement and maintain digital media archives.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist in writing high-quality content, including articles, news stories, newsletters, website content, social media posts, case studies, success stories, blogs, and campaign materials
- Help to increase our visibility among stakeholders and lawmakers
- Support the production of reports, brochures, presentations, factsheets, newsletters
- Keep track of campaign-specific communications plans and content calendars
- Identify opportunities to increase the organisation’s visibility and reach
- Ensure consistent messaging, branding, tone of voice, and visual identity
- Respond to comments and messages and escalate sensitive issues when required
- Monitor website performance and digital analytics and recommend improvements
- Maintain and update the organisation’s website
- Coordinate the production of photographs, videos, graphics, infographics, and other multimedia content.
Location
This position is based in Brussels, Belgium. We ask the successful candidate to commit to a 50%-50% combination of home and office work (hybrid).
Person Specification
Education and training
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, social sciences or a related field (preferable)
- Relevant training in the field of communication
Experience and knowledge
- A minimum of three years of experience in communications, in a similar position (essential)
Key competences
- Fluent in English, as well as French and/or Dutch (other EU official languages are considered an extra asset)
- Good knowledge of communication and graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe CC and equivalents)
- Excellent written and verbal communication with strong copywriting, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills
- Demonstrated experience managing professional social media accounts and good understanding of digital communications, social media trends, and audience engagement
- Ability to produce or coordinate multimedia content, including photography, video, graphics, and infographics, is an advantage
- Experience in creating and managing content calendars and communications campaigns
- Knowledge of website content management systems and basic SEO principles
- Meticulous working to ensure that communications are accurate, consistent, professional, and appropriate for the intended audience (with colleagues, partners, media, and external stakeholders alike)
- Ability to use social media and digital analytics to measure performance
- Ability to respond effectively to changing priorities, emerging issues, and fast-moving communications environments
- Commitment to PAN Europe’s vision, mission, values, and a working style
- Excellent critical thinking skills, able to exercise sound judgement and solve problems quickly and effectively and work independently
- Personal interest in working for the protection of health and the environment.
Job Requirement
Candidates for this role must have the pre-existing right to work in Belgium and this right must be extended to at least 24 months from the start date of the employment contract.
