Brussels · Permanent contract Technical Officer Are you interested in the technology, standards and systems that make cross-border passenger rail possible? ALLRAIL is looking for a Technical Officer to help represent the practical interests of independent passenger rail operators at European level. Location Brussels Focus Rail technology and interoperability Deadline 21 October 2026 Who we are ALLRAIL is the Alliance of Passenger Rail Companies, representing independent passenger rail operators and other companies active across Europe. A competitive Single European Railway Area depends on getting the technical foundations right. Yet different national requirements and technical barriers still make it unnecessarily complex and expensive to operate trains across borders. We work to promote interoperability, common standards and the effective deployment of new technologies —helping create a rail system with more choice, better value and stronger connections for passengers. Your role You will monitor and analyse European railway technology and interoperability developments, including: ERTMS/ETCS and its deployment; FRMCS and the future of railway communications; Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs); rolling stock authorisation and requirements affecting cross-border operations; digitalisation, railway data and other technical standards affecting passenger operators. You will also: follow developments at the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), EU institutions and relevant sector bodies; participate in technical meetings and working groups; consult ALLRAIL members and gather practical input from operators; analyse new technical and regulatory requirements; prepare briefings, presentations, consultation responses and position papers. A key part of the role will be understanding how technical rules affect railway operations in practice—and turning that insight into constructive European positions. Who we are looking for Above all, we are looking for someone who is genuinely curious about railways and technology. If terms such as ETCS, TSIs or rolling stock authorisation make you want to understand more—not switch off—you may be the person we are looking for. You should have: a technical or scientific background, such as engineering, railway systems, IT, telecommunications or transport technology; knowledge of, or a strong interest in, railway technology and interoperability; ideally, previous experience or exposure to the rail sector; the curiosity and perseverance to explore complex technical subjects; excellent written and spoken English; strong drafting, communication and organisational skills; confidence working with technical experts and stakeholders from across Europe. Existing knowledge of ERTMS/ETCS, FRMCS, TSIs, rolling stock, railway operations or authorisation processes will be particularly valuable. You do not need to know everything on your first day. What matters is your willingness and ability to develop expertise quickly. What we offer This is an opportunity to work directly with passenger rail companies and technical experts across Europe, participate in discussions with ERA and other European stakeholders, and build expertise in some of the most important technological developments shaping the future of rail. As part of a small international team, you will take real responsibility and make a visible contribution to our work. Technical interoperability is essential to making better passenger rail possible. By helping remove barriers and support smarter European standards, you will contribute to: more choice for passengers; better value and stronger competition; more seamless cross-border journeys; smarter use of public funding. How to apply Please send your: CV motivation letter salary expectations Applications should be sent to [email protected] with subject: “Technical Officer – Name” by Wednesday 21 October 2026.
