POST TITLE: Members of the European Impacted Persons Advisory Council (2 positions available)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Networks Coordinator

LOCATION: Remote – Meetings will be held online and potentially in person.

HOURS: Approximately 7.6 hours per month

CONTRACT DURATION: Until 31 March 2026

CONSULTANCY FEE: 52€ per hour

PURPOSE

Fair Trials is an international NGO that campaigns globally for fairness, due process, and equal treatment in our criminal justice systems. To further our efforts in advocating for better laws, work to reform policy, and develop international standards and best practices, Fair Trials Europe is seeking 2 members to join the European Impacted Persons Advisory Council.

The European Impacted Persons Advisory Council consists of individuals with lived experience in the criminal legal system. The primary role of its members is to advise Fair Trials Europe on its campaigns, policies, and overall strategy, ensuring they are informed by lived experiences and respectful of all backgrounds, and to support system reform.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dedicate approximately 6 hours per month to group activities, including preparing for and attending meetings.

  • Develop and write guidelines and strategies to support Fair Trials’ mission and vision.

  • Participate in both online and in-person meetings, providing valuable insights and feedback on specific issues and projects as needed.

  • Support Fair Trials in broadening its network of partners and allies.

  • Advise on specific issues and projects, ensuring that the perspectives of impacted persons are represented.

  • Collaborate with other group members to foster an inclusive and supportive environment.

MEMBERS PROFILE

  • People who are/continue to be policed, suspected, prosecuted or sentenced.

  • People belonging to communities that are disproportionately affected as a result of systemic disparities.

  • People who work as direct service providers or in grassroots organisations defending and supporting those who are most likely to have their procedural rights abused.

Requirements

  • Commitment to the Fair Trials Vision and Mission

  • Strong work ethic

  • Proficiency in writing and speaking in English

  • Robust planning and organisation skills

  • Strong sense of initiative, ability to identify priorities, and adjust plans and actions as necessary

  • Attention to detail and analytical rigour

  • Strong team skills

Preferences

  • Previous experience in collaborating with NGOs.

  • Previous experience in carrying on peer-to-peer exchange.

  • Familiarity with legal concepts and information.

SELECTION CRITERIA

We will prioritise candidates to ensure gender balance within the group. We encourage to apply those who have been or are currently under police control, suspected, prosecuted, or sentenced, especially individuals who bring diverse perspectives and experiences to ensure a consistent and coherent approach to our mission. Additionally, the selection of the final 2 candidates will adhere to Fair Trials’ principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
